Tree volume

We follow a standard method to calculate the volume of a tree based on two measurements. The first measurement is diameter at breast height (DBH) which is the diameter of the tree at 4.5 feet above the ground. The second measurement is merchantable height. This is the location where the tree will be cut-off at the top. From these two measurements can be determined how much lumber is in a tree, and thereby predict how much wood is in a particular timber area.

The formula to calculate the board feet of a tree is: (DBH/2)2 * 3.1415 * Height *0.7 * 12

(DBH/2)2 times 3.1415 (= pi) is the formula of the area of the tree at breast height since a tree is almost circular. Multiply this with the height and multiply with 0.7 to account for the taper of the tree. The result is the volume of the tree in cubic feet. There are 12 board feet of lumber for every one cubic foot. Therefore we multiply the calculated cubic feet by 12 to know how many board feet of lumber your tree has.

Finally we multiply the volume of the tree with 0.45 to take into account saw losses, etc. We multiply the resulting marketable wood per tree in board feet with the local and US market prices per board feet to determine the gross proceeds in the local and the US market.

The Wood Explorer CD provides critical woodworking knowledge for anyone with a wood related profession or any tree lover. We will receive a commission if you purchase the CD by clicking on the icon to the left. We will plant trees that will never be harvested with the commissions we receive.

We pledged our trees to the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign of the UNEP - the objective of this campaign is planting at least one billion trees worldwide each year.
